songerein archives

On the way to the Tree of Stories, by the river, one will find a small building that looks a bit like a greenhouse with the following sign above the entrance:

SONGEREIN WIKKI ARCHIVES
Named in honor of Scholar Wikki
whose work was crucial in deepening our knowledge of Tyria

Despite its small size, the interior is roomy and airy. The shelves are fitted with sheaves of paper and books, some labeled and some blank. Characters are free to and encouraged to fill out their own papers and contribute to the archive. The bundles of paper and books will always shrink or expand to fit the size of the entry, and there is always enough for more entries (something something dreamotion). There are several medium-sized tables, big enough for a few people to sit around and read or write, and plenty of comfier sitting chairs if one prefers to lounge and read at the same time.

The Archives are staffed by a few NPCs from Tyria that Trahearne recruited: a norn, a kodan, and a couple of asura, the latter of which are more or less in charge while Trahearne is away.

Right inside the doors is a sign that reads the following:

These archives were created for a better understanding of Songerein, how it works, and how we may better protect ourselves against Nightmare and the noctaere. Feel free to take whatever entries you need for study, but please return them when you are finished. This information is public and should remain free and available for all to access.

If you find information is lacking, you are encouraged to add onto entries or create your own. Every experience and perspective is invaluable at this stage.

Thank you.
- Trahearne

Trahearne will generally keep an eye on it, but leaves most of the general day-to-day operations to the staff and trusts that contributors and users are adults about the whole thing.

Feel free to handwave any general information regarding broader topics, such as dreamotion, dreamwalking, nightmare energy, Reverein itself, the wildlands, etc. Anything more specific or possibly plot-relevant will likely need an entry, but not everything does! Realistically, it's unlikely we'll have detailed accounts on everything.

v.Z.Dreamwalking & Dreamshifts An overview of the dreamshifts Barok has experienced: A Christmas-themed reconstruction and rescue mission, an odd, alternate version of a famous playwright's work, and the sudden metamorphosis of their town into another. He notes similarities between these events and his experiences dreamwalking, particularly a) being forced into some kind of change, be it unremovable clothing or an entire shift in physical form (becoming a stuffed cat as an example), b) being encouraged to play a "role," either to escape scrutiny from the dream-specific characters or fulfill a task, and c) dreamotion abilities seem easier to use. He puts forward the questions of where these dream-specific people come from, what would happen if their facade in the dreamshifts was broken, and whether these dreams are only that or also the reality of some other realm. His writing is very formal. At least his handwriting is legible, because he is definitely thorough.
TrahearneThe Flower Festival Dreamshift: A Sylvari's Perspective Trahearne details his personal experience in his first dreamshift in his first spring: the shock of a sudden scenery change, how the flowers that were abundant around town were also growing on him, how itchy and irritating the experience was. He also notes that the flowers were very susceptible to emotion and lists what his flowers signified (yellow roses: friendship; periwinkles: blossoming friendship; snowdrops: hope; zinnias: absent friends; marigolds: grief; etc). Several different types of flowers that grew on Trahearne have been pressed into the back pages.
Susato MikotobaThe Dawn Flowers Discovered by Kazuma Asogi and someone known simply as Soldier 76, Susato will give them full credit as she describes these "anti-noctaere" flowers. She will describe how they're blue and they glow, as well as a first-hand account of how being laid in a bed of said flowers helped to repel negative, hateful feelings brought on by the noctaere.
Without going into specifics, she also goes on to describe how they can quell the noctaere themselves and bring them back to their right mind, even if the subject is repelled by it. The whole flower in tact isn't necessary; the petals, crushed or otherwise are enough. She also describes the conditions in which they thrive (dark, cave-like), as well as whatever else she might have learned from tending to the greenhouse with her father, and what he might have told her from his studies at the clinic.
There are also details about how they can be used in tea and in cooking to similar effect. She describes how she's made cookies with them, with a note that their taste is very bitter on their own. And she has either doodled or imprinted a picture of the Dawn flower.
76The Dangers of Noctaere, The Story Eater's Erasers, and How To Deal With Them Opening is an acknowledgement that information in here is from first hand experience with both, and that as time passes things may evolve or be disproven.
Similiar to his journal entry he tries to hit the basic information highlights; dreamotion works best against Noctaere, coming in to physical contact with them is risky and all of that. How they can weaken someone and even attempt to possess them through inflicting their mind with their worst nightmares in dreams. They're just as dangerous -if not more so- if they manage to manifest outside of those and so on.
Erasers being best dealt with using magic, along with some history and experience in fighting them along with some information about The Story Eater itself because of how closely those tie together being creation(s) and creator and how they're usually tied to some story/myth/legend and so on. Other details and observations from his time in the Realm of Stories are included when it comes to dealing with Erasers and the Story Eater.
There is also some information on Noctasers, the hellish combination of the two created by The Story Eater, and ideas of how to fight them/ways he has fought against them with others.
There are a few illustrations providing some appearance examples, forms Noctaere and Erasers can take, made by memory imprinting ones he's seen.
AnonymousThe Realm of Stories: Concerning how the Aspects and their Essences fought back against the Story Eater. A summary on how aspects came to the Index and how they went about repairing stories. Basically, Aspects were people who agreed to help the Story Teller and had their souls bound to the Essence of a fictional character to better tether them to the Realm of Stories. From there the Aspects would go into a story and act out the tale to give it a new narrative. It is noted that stories may become different from the original, and some of the new tales are actually multiple stories combined, but it's fine as long as they manage to create a full narrative somehow.
It wasn't as simple as it sounds. On top of any random events or unexpected plot twists, the Aspects also had to fight off any Erasers the Story Eater may have sent in to slow them down. There is a brief account of an incident where the Story Eater himself tried to attack after a story nearly fell apart at the seams. Thankfully, that has been taken care of. The entry closes with the assurance that, thanks to everyone's help, the Realm of Stories is strong enough to heal on its own. The entry ends with an invitation for any former Aspects to contribute tales to the archives. The tales must be shared with the worlds!
Zelda, Princess of HyruleThe Realm of Stories and Songerein: Concerning the continued and concluding battles against Story Eater Picking up where Anonymous's First Entry left off, Zelda summarizes the rest of the Story Eater Saga up through the final battle. It's basically a summary of any and all metaplot happenings in Songerein from May 2022 through May 2023.
Notably, Zelda's summary is exhaustingly detailed and contains many a large word certain to confuse the casual reader. Sorry about that.
L.B.Troll Romance according to K. Vantas First is a brief explaination: Back in the Index, Vantas thought it would be helpful if he applied his culture's idea of romance to repairing stories. Luca isn't sure if this could also be useful here, but he may as well write an entry on it for the sake of reference. What follows is an essay the four quadrants of troll romance. Luca has graciously included a more polished copy of his own chart for people who don't like walls of text.
TrahearneThe Songerein Dream and the Sylvari Dream of Dreams A relatively detailed description of what the Dream of Dreams is--its significance to sylvari culture and society, Wyld Hunts, sylvari empathy--and what it feels like to be consciously inside of it. This description is then contrasted by what it feels like to be in the Songerein Dream (very similar), though being cut off from the Dream. This is followed by listed similarities: a nexus of stories, memories, and experiences, though Songerein's Dream is on an inter-realm scale as opposed to contained to one race. The end is speculation as to whether the Songerein Dream has a "keeper" ala the Pale Tree.
TrahearneThe Sylvari Nightmare vs Noctaere A rather rough outline and general observations of Nightmare vs Noctaere. Trahearne notes that sylvari are pulled to Nightmare, either voluntarily or involuntarily, and are typically considered lost once fallen, but that seems to be the opposite case with Noctaere, how nightmare energy seems to be instead drawn into people experiencing negative emotions. He also notes that while sylvari can be corrupted by Nightmare, no independent creatures like Noctaere exist (similar creatures are not related to the sylvari Nightmare). Tentative conclusion that they are not as similar as the Dreams themselves.
